Summary of the regions of the parameter space governing the dynamics of a massless satellite on a nearly circular orbit. The phase space features three equilibrium points (‘Laplace states’), among which P1 and P2 are stable to inclination variations and P3 is unstable. At point S1 of the parameter space, P1 and P3 degenerate into the equilibrium circle that is stableto inclination variations. In region S2 of the parameter space, P2 and P3 degenerate into the equilibrium circle that is stableto inclination variations. In regions E1, E2, and E3, respectively, P1, P2, and P3 are unstable to eccentricity variations. In region S2 ∪E2, is unstable to eccentricity variations. At point S1, is stable to eccentricity variations provided that the equatorial inclination of the satellite verifies cos2 IQ ≤ 1∕5.
