Left: star formation rate density (SFRD) for the 979 galaxies identified inside FIREbox(black line) and for galaxies grouped in different bins of stellar mass (coloured lines). The number of galaxies in each mass bin is indicated in brackets. As a comparison, the grey dashed line shows the functional form of the cosmic SFRD proposed by Madau & Dickinson (2014). Right: mass-weighted average of the metallicity of newly formed stars in the galaxies identified in FIREbox. The black line indicates the average metallicity is in the entire volume, and the different colours indicate galaxies grouped in different bins of stellar mass. In both panels, the contribution of each galaxy is re-weighted as described in Sect. 2.1 (and as pointed out in the left-hand panel of Figure 1). By way of comparison with the different Figures shown in the FIREbox paper (Feldmann et al. 2023), we do not apply a bootstrapping method here and we therefore do not indicate error bars for these estimates. We refer to that particular paper for more details on these uncertainties.
