Slices of the norm of the 3D velocity field. The top panel presents the total velocity field, and the second (bottom) panel presents the compressive (solenoidal) component obtained via the Hodge-Helmholtz decomposition. The slices are extracted from the 12 × 12 × 20 Mpc box used for the decomposition; the maps are thus 12 × 12 Mpc large, and each pixel is 22.5 kpc large. The slices presented are similar to those in Figs. 4 and 5, that is at Δxcen = { − 8, −6, −4, −2, 0, 2, 4, 6} Mpc.
