Distribution of HII regions in the Milky Way as a function of galactic longitude. The red curve is a kernel density estimate of the histogram, in black, which shows data from the WISE catalog. Regions shaded in blue and orange are in the direction of the near and far side of the bar, respectively. There are twice as many objects in the direction of the near end of the bar compared to that of the far end of the bar.
