Depletion timescales for the total molecular gas τmol (orange, based on CO(1–0)) and dense gas τdense (blue, based on HCN) for individual DSFGs from our sample. The gas masses are derived using αCO = 1 and αHCN = 10. In several galaxies, τdense ≥ τmol; this indicates that αCO and/or αHCN deviate from the assumed values. The median dense-gas depletion timescale is 24 Myr.
