The J luminosity function of the stars in the J region of the LMC, derived on the bases of the assumptions discussed in Section 2 (black line), is compared with the results obtained when the metallicity of the stars is artificially kept to Z = 10−3 until presently (blue line) and when RGB mass loss is neglected (red).
