Comparison of different stratification models for the lunar regolith. The models and respective equations from the literature are detailed in Sect. 1. For the bulk density model by Vasavada et al. (2012), we used H′ = 0.07 m from Hayne et al. (2017). For the stratification model in this study (Eq. (9)), we inserted the turnover pressure as described in Eq. (17) with a slope of −2, a transition width of ∆ = 0.5, a particle radius of 35 μm, and a grain density of ρgrain = 3000 kg m−3. The effect of varying transition width (∆ = 0.4...0.6) and particle radius is illustrated as well, with a range of 20-50 μm as motivated by McKay et al. (1991).
